An important aspect of family practice training is learning how to understand and handle a wide variety of human behavioral problems. As a family practice resident, you also will learn how to treat patients with psychosomatic illnesses. You will have an opportunity to learn about counseling in the family practice setting, including how to lead discussions with patients about lifestyle, marriage and sexual concerns. The director of behavioral medicine will assist you in patient care as well as lead didactic and supportive groups for each year of residency. Efforts are made to help you grow personally, as you grow professionally. During the third year of residency you will work with a psychiatrist in treating outpatient psychiatry patients. During a six month period, you will spend an average of four hours each week seeing these ambulatory patients through their course of treatment in the adult, adolescent and addiction clinics. Riverside's Psychiatric Services includes an inpatient unit and extensive outpatient services. Riverside has psychiatric social workers on duty 24 hours a day. These individuals assist with difficult cases when you are on family practice outpatient call or in the hospital. |
