Center for Medical Education and Innovation

The Center for Medical Education and Innovation (CME&I) uses high-tech equipment and
simulation to improve the way healthcare professionals learn. Just as simulation training has
changed the aviation industry, this type of education will revolutionize medical education and
Riverside is at the forefront of:
Improving patient safety;
Training the entire clinical team including physicians, nurses and allied health professionals;
Recruiting and retaining the best clinical talent;
Leading development and evaluation of new medical technologies;
Using human patient simulators that have more than 70,000 physiological responses.
At the heart of the CME&I is a Virtual Care Unit (VCU) so advanced it is the first of its
kind outside of the military. The VCU TM enables real patient care – the only thing simulated is the patient.
The settings – including an OR, trauma room or disaster/mass casualty environment
– are real, as are the equipment and supplies. This high-tech approach allows medical
professionals to train on fundamental skills and new technologies/procedures, while the human
patient simulators transmit the clinician’s actions to a computer so the actions and clinical results
can be reviewed and analyzed for enhanced learning and improved patient safety.
 | Riverside’s GMEC has provided $5 million in initial funding to develop the Center and will partner
with the OhioHealth Foundation to secure additional funds through philanthropy. CME&I is
on the 4th floor of the McConnell Heart Hospital.
Riverside Family Medicine residents use CME&I for a variety of purposes. Besides
taking part in weekly multidisciplinary conferences in the main conference area, Family Medicine residents
use the Virtual Care Unit to develop skills managing office emergencies, side-by-side with
RFPC nursing staff. In the Laboratory Skills Center, Family Medicine residents gain practice in airway management, pelvic
examinations, and critical care procedures.
