First year residents have one month of inpatient general surgery as the surgery intern followed by one month of outpatient surgery. Outpatient surgery may include vascular, plastics, thoracic, and general surgery offices. Many times, patients transitioning from the inpatient post-op setting to the outpatient follow up setting are seen by the same first year establishing continuity of care. The first year takes call as the surgery intern for those two months, evaluating patients in the emergency room, covering approximately one hundred surgery patients, and covering all traumas in the emergency rooms. During the second and third year, residents will be working with Riverside's outstanding staff of orthopedic, urologic, ophthalmologic and otolaryngolic surgeons. The Family Practice Center has an in office surgery room for excision of small lesions, incision and drainage of abscesses, laceration repair, and casting. Experience with flexible sigmoidoscopy, Surgitron electrosurgery and cryotherapy is provided. Vasectomies are routinely performed in the Center.
